Advice for New Olim

Let’s Talk About Making a Successful Aliyah!

Before you make aliyah, it’s important to have a set plan for life in Israel. The amount of cases we are dealing with that lacked preparation before their aliyah is astounding! KeepOlim is here to help. Read further to see our basic recommendations for a successful aliyah.

1. Start Learning Hebrew

Go to Youtube, buy childrens books, use Duolingo, watch Israeli TV shows; do whatever you can to start learning Hebrew immediately once you start thinking about making aliyah. In order to be fully successful in Israel, one must speak Hebrew. We know from experience how hard this is, but we urge you to try as hard as you can to learn and practice your Hebrew in daily life.

2. Fix Your Resume and Begin Your Job Search

Here at KeepOlim, our Free Resume Review program can help improve your resume and CV. But first, one must be open to change! Job searching is not easy for many older Olim as the companies in Israel may not appreciate your expertise and years of knowledge. So be prepared to come with new skills, a new profession and/or start your own business. Lastly, adjust your expectations – moving to Israel usually comes with a lower salary. 3. Start Saving Now

Tel Aviv is in the top 10 most expensive cities in the world, and Jerusalem is not much better! You must come with savings – at least 6-12 months worth of savings to live off of. Get extra jobs before making aliyah because you’ll be surprised by how quickly your savings will dry up. Additionally, we recommend trying to find remote work for the transition period so that you are employed from the moment you land in Israel.

4. Make the Proper Plans for Your Prescription Medication

Israel may not carry your specific medication, which is a huge issue that our Tikvka by KeepOlim Mental Health Program deals with concerning antidepressants, anxiety medication, etc. This means that if you are taking medication of any kind you need to consult your doctor on alternative medication options before making aliyah. It is important to check to see if your medications are available in Israel and covered under your health insurance before you immigrate.
